NSX-V to NSX-T (NSX 4.x) migration: a simpler network and stronger security

Migrazione da NSX-V a NSX-T: semplificare la rete e potenziare la sicurezza

As IT infrastructures evolve quickly and network security becomes critical, many companies have to upgrade obsolete platforms without disrupting day-to-day operations. This case study describes how we supported an enterprise client in its migration from VMware NSX-V to NSX 4.x (formerly NSX-T), tackling complex challenges around service continuity, advanced security and integration with multi-cloud and container environments.

With a modular, collaborative approach we transformed the client's software-defined network, laying the groundwork for a secure and scalable digital transformation able to support future business and technology needs.

Which strategies did we put in place? We explain them in this case study.

Modernising the enterprise network: from challenge to solution

When the client contacted us, it was at a critical crossroads: its virtual network, based on VMware NSX-V, was obsolete and reaching end of life. Continuing to run on an unsupported platform meant putting security, scalability and service continuity at risk. The goal was clear: modernise the infrastructure, increase flexibility and ensure high security standards, without interrupting critical operations.

We applied a modular, collaborative IT outsourcing approach, working side by side with the client's internal IT teams. Moving from NSX-V to VMware NSX 4.x (formerly NSX-T) was not a simple upgrade: it was a real transformation of the software-defined network, opening the way to multi-cloud and container environments.

Technologies and strategic choices

To ensure a safe, controlled transition, we used vSphere and vCenter to manage VMs and network resources centrally.

vRealize Network Insight allowed us to map the dependencies between workloads and security policies and to monitor network health in real time. We also implemented the Distributed Firewall to protect every segment, with dynamic micro-segmentation and granular control of internal and external traffic.

This combination of technologies was designed to deliver:

  • Advanced security: data protection and isolation of critical workloads.
  • Network process automation: fewer manual errors and faster deployments.
  • Full visibility: end-to-end monitoring of policies and traffic.
  • Scalability and flexibility: immediate support for new applications, container environments and hybrid cloud.

IT Global's modular approach

Every phase of the migration was planned and tested in advance to minimise risk. We migrated security policies, micro-segmentation configurations and distributed services without interrupting operations, so the client could adopt the new technologies gradually and without service disruption.

From results to concrete benefits

Today the client runs a modern, scalable and resilient network.

Dynamic micro-segmentation has significantly increased security, while automation and centralised management have reduced bottlenecks and operational errors.

The IT infrastructure is ready to support containers, hybrid cloud and future digital transformation initiatives.

Thanks to this project, the client's IT is no longer just an operational department but a real driver of innovation, ready to face market challenges and support business growth.
